EMT Basic Course
Emergency Medical Technicians provide out of hospital emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical services (EMS) system. EMTs have the basic knowledge and skills necessary to stabilize and safely transport patients ranging from non-emergency and routine medical transports to life threatening emergencies. Emergency Medical Technicians function as part of a comprehensive EMS response system, under medical oversight. Emergency Medical Technicians perform interventions with the basic equipment typically found on an ambulance. Emergency Medical Technicians are a critical link between the scene of an emergency and the health care system.
The EMT education program covers all emergency medical concepts and techniques currently considered to be within the responsibilities of the EMT-Basic (EMT-B) providing emergency care in a pre-hospital setting as set forth by the Unit of Emergency Medical Services of the State of Missouri. This program meets or exceeds course requirements established by the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Missouri Unit of Emergency Medical Services. The education program will also cover topics related to future trends and care methodologies in emergency medicine.
Course Objectives
- Perform Trauma and Medical patient assessments
- Demonstrate proficiency in EMT-B practical skills within the scope of practice
- Understand basic vehicle operation, MCI operations, and aircraft utilization
- Understand basic human anatomy and body system physiology
- Provide adequate patient care based on assessment findings & questioning
- Adequately write patient care report forms
